Williamson County Historical Society Unveils New Military Exhibit

The Williamson County Historical Society (WCHS), in partnership with the Marion Chamber of Commerce, celebrated the opening of a new military exhibit with a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring both local history and national heritage.

Matt Carnaghi, Chair of the Marion Chamber of Commerce, welcomed attendees and highlighted the Historical Society’s significance as a cultural and educational resource. He noted the building’s unique history, originally constructed as a county jail in 1913 before becoming a museum in 1972.

Mayor Michael Absher shared remarks emphasizing the importance of recognizing and honoring military service. He noted that the exhibit’s opening aligns with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, making it a meaningful time to reflect on the contributions of service members throughout history.

Senator Jacobs also addressed attendees, sharing his appreciation for regional museums and their role in preserving stories that might otherwise be lost. Drawing from his own military background, he spoke to the importance of honoring those who have served.

Executive Director Sam Lattuca provided insight into the Historical Society’s mission and history. Founded in the 1930s and revitalized in the 1950s, the organization operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by public donations. The facility houses both a museum and a genealogical research library, offering resources unavailable elsewhere in the region.

Lattuca also highlighted the building’s listing on the Illinois Registry of Historic Places and encouraged the community to visit, explore exhibits, and take advantage of guided tours and research services.
