December 2025 Luncheon Recap: State of the City
Luncheon Recap
Chamber Luncheon Highlights: State of the City, Leadership Updates, and What’s Ahead
Our recent Chamber Luncheon brought together members, partners, and community leaders for an engaging and informative afternoon focused on Marion’s continued growth, leadership, and opportunities ahead. Hosted at The Pavilion and sponsored by First Southern Bank, the luncheon showcased why collaboration remains at the heart of Marion’s success.
A Meaningful Start
The luncheon opened with a warm welcome from Karen Mullins, Executive Director of the Marion Chamber of Commerce, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation delivered by John Holst of Zion United Church of Christ. These opening moments set a thoughtful and unified tone for the program.
Program
This annual event featured the highly anticipated “State of the City” presentation by Mayor Mike Absher, offering an insightful look at Marion’s progress and plans as we head into 2026.
Mayor Absher emphasized three key themes driving Marion forward: momentum, discipline, and opportunity. He shared impressive economic indicators, including:
- 25,800+ unique visits to the renovated Tower Square from travelers 50 miles or more away.
- 231,000 hotel night stays recorded this year, with more growth expected as new hotels near completion.
- The successful launch of the STAR Bonds program, fueling redevelopment projects like the former mall property now under Black Diamond ownership.
Exciting developments are on the horizon, including a family entertainment center featuring electric go-karts, laser tag, interactive bowling, arcade games, and a two-level restaurant and bar. Construction also continues on The Fieldhouse, a sports and recreation hub, alongside three new hotels designed to complement Marion’s growing sports tourism.
Housing initiatives were another highlight, with $4 million in TIF grants sparking $12 million in private investment in older neighborhoods. The city also approved plans for 41 new housing units, including 27 single-family homes in the Midway Court area.
New Policies and Community Initiatives
Mayor Absher also addressed two significant policy updates:
- Vacant Property Registry Incentive: To encourage revitalization, Marion introduced an incentive program tied to its vacant property registry. This initiative aims to reduce blight and promote redevelopment by offering benefits to property owners who comply with registration and improvement guidelines.
- Ban on Kratom Sales: In a move to protect public health and safety, Marion enacted a ban on the sale of kratom within city limits. The decision reflects growing concerns about the substance’s potential risks and aligns with efforts to maintain a safe community environment.
City Facility Updates
The Mayor highlighted improvements to several key city facilities that enhance quality of life and community engagement:
- Club 60: Upgrades to better serve senior residents and expand programming.
- Boyton Street Community Center: Renovations to support youth activities and neighborhood events.
- Marion Carnegie Library: Modernization projects to improve accessibility and technology resources.
- Marion Cultural and Civic Center: Enhancements to maintain its status as a premier venue for arts and entertainment.
- Marion Fire Department: Facility improvements to support emergency response and firefighter safety.
- Marion Training Center: Expanded capabilities for workforce development and public safety training.
These updates reflect Marion’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that benefits residents and businesses alike.
Looking ahead, Mayor Absher teased Marion’s participation in the America 250 initiative, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, with a major event planned for July 2, 2026.
