March Luncheon Summary

The March 14th Membership luncheon hosted around 120 people at the American Legion Post 147 in Marion. Board chair Michelle Hamilton welcomed the attendees and Pastor Jason Thrash of Cornerstone Church provided the invocation. The St. Patrick's-themed lunch provided by the American Legion was enjoyed by the crowd. Luncheon sponsors, Southern Illinois Rejuvenation, were represented by co-owners John Covington and Jason Powell. The 6-person program panel provided insightful information about the different facets of fraud facing our business community. Speaker profiles and resources are provided below.


After the program, State Senator Dale Fowler presented checks to the 2022 SI Made Expo Charity, Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois and Operation Honor Guard, of $22,582.65 to each organization. He also announced the dates for the2023 SI Made Expo event and named the 2023 event proceeds organization, VETS.

    Recent Projects

    Last week we held our first ‘Bite of Reality’ financial literacy event with Marion High School and interacted with around 400 business class students. Students were given a career, spouse, child, and monthly income. They then worked with event volunteers (have them raise their hands) at expense tables to try and make a monthly budget work. The volunteers and students learned a lot from the experience, and we look forward to future one-on-one opportunities with our students.​ Blog post about the event...


    On Sunday, the 11th annual Chamber Foundation Bass Tournament took place with 42 teams. Thank you do this year’s sponsors including Hill Printing, Pyramid Acres, First Southern Bank, and Big Bass Sponsors: Hampleman Law, LLC, Interstate Tire Pros Auto Service, SouthernTrust Bank, Williamson County Treasurer - Ashley Gott, and Vernell’s Interstate Service.     Upcoming Projects

    The Black Diamond of Businesses will be hosting a special Business After Hours on March 23rd at Rent One Park from 4 – 7 pm to spotlight their exciting future plans!


    On March 24th, Oasis Lawn and Garden will celebrate the opening of their new location at 3000 West DeYoung (next to Dillards) with a Ribbon Cutting at 4 pm and open house till 6 pm. Refreshments will be provided from the Turn. 


    If you are interested in mentoring the leaders and employees of tomorrow, we invite you to take part in the Marion High School FBLA Job Shadow Day on March 31st. We are also working with the MHS business department to establish a contact list of potential shadowing site for local students.     Members of the Business Advocacy Task Force will be attending Chamber Day on April 18th in Springfield. This is a great opportunity to hear presentations from officials across the state on issues that will impact our region. Learn More...

    Program Information

    Amber Bone  joined Legence Bank in 2017 as a Branch Manager for our Mounds Branch.  She has served as a Teller, Branch Manager, Loan Officer, and currently as our Fraud Specialist at Legence. 


    She helps educate our customers on Fraud, providing resources and tips to help them be proactive.  She has assisted numerous customers in recovery from various types of fraud. In 2022, she assisted more than 450 local customers with incidents leading to identity theft, account compromise, and unfortunately monetary loss.  Fraud can happen to anyone – being educated and prepared are the best defense to help protect yourself and your business.     


    Amber continues to be involved with SIDEZ – the Southernmost Illinois Delta Empowerment Zone.  Promoting economic development, infrastructure development and tourism in Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Union and Pulaski counties.

    Police Chief David Fitts is a Marion native with 30 years of law enforcement experience.  Fitts started out with the Williamson County Sheriff’s office and later spent more than two decades with Illinois State Police. This included being part of the Illinois State Police SWAT for 15 years and an instructor at the Illinois State Police Academy. He also served as director of the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, a group dedicated to drug crimes, for more than four years. He was also in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years. He joined the Marion Police Department as Chief in the spring of 2019. He is honored to serve the citizens of Marion and is proud of the officers who serve within his department.

    Ted Hampson is the Williamson County State's Attorney. He graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1995 with a B.S. Degree in civil engineering. He subsequently graduated from SIU Carbondale College of Law in 2000, obtaining a Juris Doctorate.


    ​In 2003, Ted earned his Masters in Business Administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Ted was admitted to practice law in The State of Illinois, as well as, the United States District Court, Southern District of Illinois. Ted has also served as a State's Attorney in Winnebago County (Rockford).

    Christine Hankins is the President of Retail Banking at Farmers State Bank and has worked in the banking industry for over 20 years. During her time with Farmers State Bank, Christine has played a major role in their Core Deposit Growth totaling more than $20 million. As President of Retail Banking, Christine and her team deal with financial fraud on a regular basis. Through her first-hand experience in seeing fraud take place, she has become an expert in identifying fraud and in helping to prevent it before it occurs.

    Whitney Stringer is currently a Vice President and Commercial Lender at First Southern Bank.  Throughout her 16 year banking career, she has held multiple positions, which included Branch Manager, Compliance Officer & Chief Executive Officer.  Over that time, she has developed a passion for helping small businesses navigate their ebbs and flows, and at times, that has included fraud detection and fraud mitigation efforts.

    On Monday, February, members of the business community, civic leaders, and staff of Rachael Academy of Education gathered to celebrate the opening of their new facility in Marion. Ribbon Cutting guests were greeted by Chamber Board Chair Deborah Hogg. Mayor Michael Absher spoke about need in this area for additional educational and behavioral resources. Mary Anderson, Directory of the academy, and Nathan thanked their staff, interns, and community partners on their help to make this facility a reality.
