March 14, 2022 (Harrisburg, Ill.) – Farmers State Bank of Alto Pass is pleased to announce the development of their fifth branch to be located at 1720 South Park Avenue in Herrin, Illinois. To celebrate the new location, Farmers State Bank recently hosted a community leaders’ dinner, revealing the first renderings of the soon-to-be Herrin branch. The new location is set to break ground later this month.
“We are thrilled to show the fine folks of Herrin what true community banking is all about,” said Tom Franks, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “We plan to plug in to every aspect of the Herrin community including academics, athletics, philanthropy, and wherever else we can serve. We are not here to take; we are here to give”.
Farmers State Bank is already involved in the Herrin community, especially with the schools. Farmers recently sponsored the FBLA Etiquette Dinner and the Senior Breakfast where they introduced students to a financial literacy app enabling them to make informed and effective decisions as they transition into adulthood. Along with being a proud Herrin athletics sponsor, Farmers looks forward to offering academic scholarships starting in 2023. Farmers is a member of the Herrin Chamber of Commerce and an active participant with Herrin Festa Italiana.
“We cannot wait to become part of a place that shares our core values, faith, and community mindedness,” said Charles Holland, CEO. “We have already been building a great team for the Herrin branch including Quinn Laird, our Community Bank President and Kelly Green, Senior Vice President. Our purpose is to serve the needs of the people of Herrin and to step into that purpose with every small and large decision we make”.
As a family-owned, full-service bank, Farmers will offer the Herrin community in-branch and digital banking solutions such as online and mobile banking as well as an array of consumer and commercial products. Along with banking services, Farmers now offers insurance services for you, your family, and your business.
Farmers State Bank of Alto Pass is a locally owned and operated community bank. With branches in Harrisburg, Alto Pass, and Marion, Farmers State Bank spans across the southern Illinois region. Farmers has grown from a bank with $3,000,000 in assets in 1994 to over $327,000,000 in total assets today.

Makanda, IL Giant City Stables, home of Specialized Equine Services and Therapeutic Riding (SES). We do horse assisted learning for special needs children and adults. Background, SES’s large lesson horses are starting to age out and Ramona has been on the lookout for replacements for more than a year. Sound lesson horses/mules are expensive, therefore, last year SES applied for a $10,000 grant for a horse/mule and was denied. (Note: This company has given SES a couple of small grants in the past, and a huge supporter of Veterans)
On March 1, 2022, I get a call from our contact to inform us that SES was awarded a $10,000 grant. Unbeknown to us, our contact reapplied in January! In that same week, Ramona found a pair of Belgium cross mules in Mississippi for under $10,000. They had been purchased by a woman who goes to auctions and saved these mules from the slaughterhouse. After viewing videos of the mules with a Veterinarian, Ramona purchased Billy Bob and Mustang Sally, and arranged for them to be transported to Southern IL.
The mules and a quarter horse arrived in the middle of the night on Thursday along with many other horses on their way to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Early (before 6 am) Ramona gets a call from the driver of the transport and said he needed to come to the stable, now. A miniature mare had her baby on the transport, (open with no heat) the driver thought the baby was born about 4 am. Cold, wet, and comatose. Not encouraged what they saw, Ramona and Francisco did what they could to warm the baby and help the mom. Baby started to come around and was finally able to get milk from its mom. This was a tremendous feat accomplished by Ramona and Francisco. Now, the challenge was to get through the night of bitter cold temperatures, (barn is not heated). Making sure they were out of a draft and piled hay around on them worked. The mom and baby will stay at the stables until the Veterinarian says it’s safe for them to travel, then the owners from New Jersey will come and get them.

(March 12, 2022) – Centerstone, a national leader in behavioral health care, will host a free, virtual Savvy Caregiver training to be held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – noon from April 6 – May 11.

The Savvy Caregiver provides instruction in caregiver self-care, decision making, and navigating family issues that may come up while being a caregiver. The training also addresses the need to keep the care receiver involved in daily tasks and activities to keep them active and content throughout the day.
“Savvy Caregiver affords many the opportunity to hear from other caregivers and know that they are not alone in this journey of caregiving,” said Laura Kunz, Centerstone Senior Services Clinician.
The training was created using a curriculum developed by the University of Minnesota and is funded by AgeSmart Community Resources.
If anyone would like to attend this training but the time or dates of the sessions does not work, please contact Kunz at Laura.Kunz@Centerstone.org or (618) 772-4620. Attendees will be required to attend all six of the two-hour sessions.

This training is presented by Centerstone’s Caregiver Support program.
The Caregiver Support program provides counseling support for Madison and Bond county residents who are over the age of 18 and care for a relative, neighbor, or friend over the age of 60.
“Caregivers who feel stressed, depressed or anxious due to caregiving tasks and responsibilities are elgible for counseling,” Kunz said.
The program also includes in-home counseling support and a monthly caregiver education and support group in Alton. Caregiver Support services are free-of-charge and are sponsored by AgeSmart Community Resources.

Centerstone receives grant from Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation to form Giant Steps toward Wellness for Giant City school
WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (March 11, 2022) – Centerstone, a national leader in behavioral health care, received a $300,000 grant from the Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation’s Covid School Wellness Initiative to provide mental and emotional health services to Giant City School District students, families and school staff who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The social and emotional effects of the pandemic on adults and children are likely to be long-lasting,” said Belinda Hill, Giant City school superintendent/principal. “A new era of school wellness is evolving to support students and families.”
Overcoming the negative effects of isolation, fear and lack of social interaction in children will be a shared responsibility between schools and families. To that end, Centerstone and the school created “Giant Steps toward Wellness,” a program that will focus on individual recovery and mental health services.
The goals of “Giant Steps toward Wellness” include:
“The Covid School Wellness Initiative is an attempt by ILCHF to address emotional stress and distress caused by the pandemic,” said Amy Starin, PhD, LCSW, ILCHF's Senior Program Officer for Mental Health. “What is unique about it is that we encouraged applicants to address the emotional wellness of not only children, but also parents, caregivers and school staff.”
